What is The Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill (or medical abortion) combines two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.

During this medication regime, a pregnancy is terminated and passed out of the woman’s body.

However, women should always discuss this medication with a trusted provider or pregnancy center to understand if their health is eligible for this process and the associated risks and side effects.

How Does The Abortion Pill Work?

Mifepristone is the first medication used in the abortion pill combination. This drug works by blocking progesterone, an essential pregnancy hormone. When this occurs, the uterine lining begins thinning, and the embryo becomes displaced.

Next, misoprostol is taken. This drug acts by inducing contractions. These contractions will push the pregnancy tissue and embryo out of the body through the vagina.

What Are The Risks?

According to the Mayo Clinic, associated risks include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

It’s also stated that some individuals will not qualify for a medical abortion. Women may not qualify due to health history, the woman being too far along in her pregnancy, having an IUD, or having an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus).

Additionally, there are over 200 medications that are not recommended to take with the abortion pill. Talk with a pregnancy care center or physician to receive clarity and answers, so you understand what is suitable for your health and wellness.
