If you received a positive result on your pregnancy test, getting an ultrasound is the next step to confirming your pregnancy.

How Does Ultrasound Work?

Ultrasound is a scan that uses sound waves to create an image of your internal structures.

Two different types of ultrasound are used during pregnancy: transvaginal and abdominal. However, both types of ultrasound will look for key pregnancy details, and you will be able to see your pregnancy on the ultrasound screen.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

Transvaginal ultrasound is used very early in pregnancy because it offers a clearer image.

During a transvaginal ultrasound, the sonographer (the medical professional who operates the ultrasound machine) will gently insert the transducer (the wandlike part of the ultrasound machine) into your vagina. You may feel slight pressure as the transducer is moved around.

Abdominal ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound is used later in pregnancy. During this appointment, the sonographer will squirt a jellylike substance onto your abdomen before moving the transducer over that area.

How Does an Ultrasound Protect My Health?

No matter your pregnancy decision, you need to know certain details about your pregnancy to stay safe. An ultrasound is the only way to learn these critical details, which include:

  • Gestational age: Even if you use a period tracking app or think you know your due date, this information can be incorrect. In fact, during an ultrasound, many women are surprised to learn that their pregnancies are much further along than they thought. Knowing your gestational age is essential, as it will dictate what options are available for your pregnancy.
  • Location: Sometimes, a pregnancy will develop outside the uterus. This is a life-threatening emergency known as an ectopic pregnancy, and if you’re experiencing one, you will need immediate medical intervention.
  • Viability: Roughly 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, and it’s possible to have had a miscarriage without any immediate signs. An ultrasound will look for signs of life, like a heartbeat, to ensure you’re still pregnant. If not, medical follow-up is important to ensure you don’t face any complications.
