If you use marijuana for medical or recreational purposes, you might wonder if you can continue to use it during pregnancy. Marijuana contains chemicals that may be harmful to your baby. Chemicals like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can pass through the placenta to your baby’s bloodstream and interfere with his/her development. No amount of marijuana has been shown safe during pregnancy.
What Are the Risks of Using Marijuana During Pregnancy?
Using marijuana during pregnancy may be harmful to your baby, so you should talk to your doctor if you are pregnant and still using marijuana. Researchers are still studying the effects that marijuana has on a developing infant, but some studies show that prenatal exposure to marijuana is associated with the following risks:
- Lower cognitive abilities
- Attention deficits
- Impulsivity (acting without thinking)
Another associated risk of marijuana use during pregnancy is preterm birth and low birth weight. Both of these factors can increase an infant’s risk of health problems like the following:
- Respiratory conditions
- Developmental delays
- Increased risk of long-term health conditions
Are Edibles Better for Pregnancy Than Smoking Marijuana?
Regardless of how marijuana is introduced to a woman’s body, it can affect her baby. This means that smoking and ingesting can both be dangerous for pregnancy.
Even being around someone else while they are smoking marijuana can cause problems in pregnancy. Secondhand smoke from marijuana has been shown to be as toxic as cigarette smoke, and THC can enter the body through secondhand smoke and cross the placenta.
