A medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill method, can have lasting physical and emotional consequences. There are also limits as to who can use this method. You can protect your health and safety by getting as much information as possible beforehand.

The following are some facts about the abortion pill method you may not have been aware of.

Not Everyone is Eligible to Take the Drugs

The abortion pill method isn’t for everyone. The Cleveland Clinic states the procedure isn’t a safe option for you if the following apply:

  • You are too far along in your pregnancy (the FDA approves the use of the drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy only)
  • You are allergic to the drugs used
  • You have an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place
  • Have a pregnancy developing outside your uterus (ectopic pregnancy)
  • You have certain medical conditions
  • You take a blood thinner, have a blood clotting disorder, or significant anemia
  • You don’t have access to emergency care

It Is Possible to Have an Incomplete Abortion

An incomplete abortion means the drugs ended the pregnancy, but not all of the pregnancy tissue left your body. If tissue remains in your body, it can cause a serious infection.

An incomplete abortion is possible with a medical or surgical abortion. It is also possible you could be left with an ongoing pregnancy if the drugs for a medical abortion don’t work.

Some Women Report Intense Pain

Although women experience abortion differently, many report unexpectedly severe pain with a medical abortion. One report found that some women described the pain as “out of this world.”  It’s essential to understand what to expect.

There Are Emotional Risks, Too

A study published in the National Library of Medicine found that women who have abortions are more likely to have mental health issues compared to women who don’t. The abortion experience can directly affect a woman’s mental health, especially if she has previously struggled with mental illness.
