If you’ve had an abortion in the past, or you’re thinking about one now, it’s normal to wonder what it could mean for your future. One common question many women have is whether they can become pregnant again. The short answer is yes, but there are a few important things to understand.
At Reach Out Pregnancy, you can talk through your questions in a supportive setting and get the information you need about your health and options. Schedule a no-cost, confidential appointment today.
How Quickly Fertility Returns
Fertility is complex, and no two women’s experiences are the same. While abortion does not automatically prevent future pregnancy, it’s important to be cautious of anyone who tells you with certainty that you will be able to conceive afterward. There are many variables involved, and future fertility is never something that can be fully guaranteed. If growing your family someday is a priority, it’s worth factoring that into your decision.
How Abortion Complications Can Affect Fertility
Both medical and surgical abortions carry a risk of infection, and in some cases, that infection can have lasting effects on reproductive health.
Infection can develop in several ways. With a medical abortion, tissue that isn’t fully expelled can remain in the uterus, creating an environment where infection can take hold. After a surgical abortion, if the uterus is not fully emptied, it can lead to similar complications. An existing STD or STI that goes undetected can also spread into the reproductive system during either type of procedure.
When an infection spreads to the uterus or surrounding structures, it can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID. If PID goes untreated or is severe, scar tissue can build up on the uterine wall, a condition known as Asherman’s syndrome. This can make it harder to become pregnant down the road or lead to complications during a future pregnancy.
It’s also worth noting that Asherman’s syndrome is a known risk of surgical abortion even when no infection is present.
Antibiotics can treat many infections, particularly when caught early. The key is recognizing symptoms and getting medical attention promptly rather than waiting to see if things improve on their own.
