Did your regular birth control method fail? Or did you have unprotected sex? If so, you might be wondering if there’s a chance you could be pregnant.
While many women experience early symptoms of pregnancy, it’s essential to know that taking a pregnancy test is the first step toward finding out if you’re pregnant.
Early Pregnancy Symptoms
When you become pregnant, special hormones make big changes in your body, which can cause symptoms in many women.
If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, you might be pregnant:
- Missed menstrual period. Are you still expecting your period to arrive this month? If your period is late, there’s a chance you could be pregnant. In fact, a missed period is often one of the first signs of early pregnancy. This is because those early pregnancy hormones tell your uterine lining to thicken instead of shed, causing your periods to stop for the duration of the pregnancy.
- Sore, swollen breasts. If your bra is fitting tighter or you notice that your breasts are more tender than usual (similar to how they might feel during your period), this could mean you’re pregnant. Early pregnancy hormones get to work quickly, preparing your breasts for breastfeeding.
- Increased urination. Have you been going to the bathroom more frequently? During early pregnancy, your blood volume increases, which causes your kidneys to produce more urine.
- Fatigue. If you’ve been feeling more tired than usual, this could be a sign of pregnancy—especially if other early pregnancy symptoms accompany your fatigue.
- Nausea with/without vomiting. Sometimes referred to as “morning sickness,” the nausea and vomiting that can happen during pregnancy can actually occur at any time of the day. If you’re feeling sick to your stomach without any known cause (such as food poisoning), this could be a sign of pregnancy.
While experiencing these symptoms can indicate that you’re pregnant, they can also indicate other health conditions. This is why it’s critical to take a pregnancy test if you think you could be pregnant.
